This weekend in video games

I haven't been playing Pokemon lately (but when I was I logged in a LOT of hours on that game) but Saturday I went to Toys R Us to get my Manaphy. He's a rare pokemon that you could only get at Toys R Us on Aug. 29th between 12-3. Me and about 6 kids downloading our rare pokemon and getting our little gift bags with stickers and a $5 off coupon for a DS game. I used the coupon to get Jam Sessions. It's not really a game but a guitar simulator. It's fun so far but there isn't the sense of accomplishment like with a traditional video game.

Then, I went to my families house in Bremen and got to play Halo 3. It is a good game but a little overwhelming. There are so many new weapons and modes that I felt a little lost. Graphically it was nice but not the most impressive thing I've seen on an Xbox 360. During the campaign cut scenes, Master Chief looked great but the human models looked like PS2 graphics.

Online multiplayer was pretty awesome (again, a little overwhelming)and the thing that impressed me most was a little world map in the lower left-hand corner of the Matchmaking screen. I think it represents where the most online activity is happening around the world. Not sure if it was in real time but it was cool.
I played using my brother-in-laws online ID and I was able to access these awesome stats.

Before I played Halo 3, I was entertaining the thought of saving up money and buying an Xbox 360 just to play Halo 3. After playing it, I can no longer justify spending over $500 just to play Halo. It's a good game, but for now I will just have to be satisfied playing it every couple of weeks when I go to visit my family.

Weight Blotchers

Today I joined Weight Watchers. I've been wanting to lose weight for years but never stopped playing video games long enough to do anything about it. Weight Watchers seemed interesting because it is more a way of tracking what you eat day to day.

The first meeting was interesting. I was cynical at hearing these ladies talk about their "fat pants" and stressing over weighing themselves but I did get excited and happy when other ladies talked about reaching certain goals. When one woman announced the had finally lost 16lbs everyone applauded and I really felt happy for her.

I'm not a hardcore Street Fighter II player and I can't begin to tell you all the things they are doing in this match but the crowd reaction is AWESOME!

If you will notice, the health bar of the Ken player is almost gone and he "parries" (better than "block" I guess because he's not taking any damage) all the rapid fire attacks at the end of the clip.

My favorite Street Fighter II story is back in college, Christian spent the night at my house in Bremen. We played Street Fighter II into the wee hours of the morning. This version of Street Fighter II kept track of all the stats of a particular player. That night, Christian was unbeatable with Ken. When he would select a character he would ponder aloud, "Hmmm, should I dare risk 100% Ken? Hmmm." To which I bitterly replied, "Just pick him already you know you're
gonna win."

Maybe it's not so funny now but it was pretty hilarious at 3am.

I've watched the first two episodes of John From Cincinnati
I've enjoyed it although, I felt like the characters weren't really talking to each other in the first episode.
I like seeing all those Deadwood actors again.

The coolest part is the open title sequence. Some new surf footage and what looks like some old surf footage. All the titles are in a simple white text and the song "Johnny Appleseed" by Joe Strummer plays over these opening credits. I'll tune in again just to see those credits.

Gots me some Pokemon Pearl for the Nintendo DS and I'm (bah da da da dah) lovin' it!

This is my current line up. My highest level is 33.

I was excited about the WiFi in this game but it is a total pain in the ass to use. I can't use it at home because I have a WPA password and the DS only supports the weaker WEP (lame). I did get on once and made a trade via the GTS (kinda like a Pokemon Craig's List). Most of the kids on the GTS are offering up crap Pokemon and they want rare pokemon in trade (lame x2).

I did grab a Kricketune and he's been rising up the ranks fast due to the exp. bonus that pokemon received in trades get... I'm a nerd.

Awesome news from Kotaku. Capcom is making an HD remix of Street Fighter II. Fighting games (not to mention 2D fighting games) seem to have fallen out of fashion with today's gamer. The gamers that do care about fighting games look toward Guilty Gear as the graphic standard (you can see a Guilty Gear character on the comparison shot above). This HD Remix looks leaps beyond Guily Gear. Could this HD Street Fighter lead to the rebirth of the 2D fighting game?

I stumbled on this black movie while looking for some Frisky Dingo source photos.

Over-acting aside, there is something intriguing about these films. I believe many of them start as touring stage productions with religious themes. Tyler Perry has become a mogul of this type of movie (and the most popular black drag performer since RuPaul).

Last month my brother-in-law George and I attended GenCon Indy. Check out some of what we saw on my
GenCon flickr set.

George and I mainly went to participate in a couple of Warmachine tournaments. We had fun and it was interesting to see a convention that is entirely geared towards gaming. There were booths by all the major roleplaying/card/miniature companies and some were selling pre-release items.

There weren't as many costumed folks as say Dragon Con, but there was just as much gamer funk.

Dim Sum Remix

Since the last post, Molly and I have been to two other Dim Sum places on Buford Highway. A couple of weeks ago we went to Canton House and last Sunday we went to China Delight. Canton House was okay (I liked their mango pudding and also the coconut pudding. Molly liked the fried tofu with shrimp). China Delight was better than Canton House but I still like Happy Valley the best. Happy Valley was so busy that you couldn't help but get a large variety of fresh food coming around on cart quite often.

We saw Tang and he suggested Oriental Pearl. We may try it but I think we'll try Happy Valley again first. Anyone want to join us?

Dim Sum bulging-ass eyes

Two weeks ago I had my first Dim Sum. Molly was there and see documented the whole thing. It seemed like the Dim Sum at Happy Village was the real deal because the vast majority of customer were Chinese. Here are my Dim Sum tips:

1) Pace yourself. Don't just grab as many items as you can off the first cart that passes by. I was super stuffed and then I saw a plate of little clams. Dammit! I love little clams, but there was no way I could eat anymore.

2) Sesame balls are worth waiting for (we had to wait 15mins.)

3) Don't watch Chinese girls eat a chicken's foot. They gnaw on it and just let the bones tumble out of their mouths. I say girls because I didn't see any men eating a chicken's feet. I did, however, see a Chinese man wearing the worst toupee I had ever seen.

4) Sweet tofu dessert (ame-dofu?) soothes my guts.

How much English do you have to learn to get a Cheese steak?

Edit: Well, the Geno's sign does say "Please." Let me explain myself. When I was working in Japan I tried to learn Japanese so I could do things like order fast food, ask where the bathroom was, how much are these soiled panties, etc. However, sometimes when I was trying to order in Japanese or whatever the clerks couldn't understand me. I would get frustrated and default to English and we could usually work it out. If I saw a sign in Japan that read, "This is Japan, speak Japanese when ordering." I would have felt like shit. I would have felt like there was some racial animosity being directed towards me. There is only two types of reactions a sign like this can produce to a non-native speaker: depression and anger.

The irony is that this guy's name is Vento and the stand is called Geno's. When my Grandma was a kid in Connecticut, she told me their neighborhood was almost exclusively Italian and Italian was spoken at many stores around town. Were these people any less American because the didn't speak English?

Was I providing any less of a service in Japan because I couldn't speak Japanese? I was still working hard at the job I was brought over to do.

Went to see the Chuck Close exhibit at the High. I highly recommend it. It's $15 but it is well worth it. I went to the High a lot when I was a student at ACA but I hadn't been in a long time. The expansion is awesome. I was super impressed.

The Chuck Close exhibit is so nice because you get to see his progression as an artist. You can see the progression of new mediums (the large format Polaroids are amazing). You can see him get older and more mature both physically and artistically
(oddly enough he seems to get more playful with his art the older he gets).

I also highly recommend you go to the Graveyard Tavern in East Atlanta. Not for the food, not for the drinks, not for the lame DJ that was spinning bad techno while polarized kung-fu movies were being projected on a screen, not for any of that. You need to go see the art hanging on the back wall near the dartboards and pool tables. Wow! It is really bad. Little paintings on wood hung with a wire strung with plastic beads (yes, I said plastic beads). With titles like, "Untitled, with black sun" and "The Witches of East Atlanta", it is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Of course, 007 (Shanty Town) may be one of the best ska songs ever and I've always been very partial to "Pickney Gal."

Last night I went to the Carter Center with my co-worker Mack to see Sarah Vowell. She was funny and charming. I thought I had a crush on her before, now I know I do. She read from her book "Assassination Vacation" and some Op-Ed pieces she's done recently. She also took some questions (the last two were about the Incredibles).

The following is the actual conversation I had after this picture was taken:

SV: Oh, I got a thumbs up.

CW: Yeah. Have you seen 43 plays for 43 presidents?

SV: No... (with rising intonation, I've piqued her interest!)

CW: It's awesome. It's by the Neo-Futurists out of Chicago.

Inspired by Meiyuun, I decided to take some pictures of a down (but not out) stuffed animal. His name is Woo-Woo ( which is onomatopoetic, for that is the sound a dog makes to a very young me).

Woo-Woo was given to me at 6 months old by a friend of my Mother's. So, on Jan. 25th (my birthday) Woo-Woo will turn an ancient 31 and 1/2 years old.

He's had multiple surgeries and needs many more. Unfortunately, I don't know how to sew. My sister promised to repair him but that was years ago. My mom used to be his chief surgeon.

Woo-Woo has been through a lot. When I was younger and would get frustrated I would sometimes punch him. I have since apologized and Woo-Woo forgave me. He has truly been there for me, always. He's a rock.

Woo-Woo doesn't live with me in my basement apartment. I'm afraid his fragile fur and mesh couldn't take the humidity. Instead, Woo-Woo lives in my old bedroom at my family's house, guarding it with his vigilant red eyes. In case he ever forgets I just want to say, Woo-Woo, I love you.

Happy New Year (a little late). My boss and landlord, Adam, went to Guatemala for the holidays (to study Spanish). He got back to his room one night to see this guy stalking around. I really like the color of this spider (jungle camo?). The bug hunt has kind of slowed down at my place (getting too cold?).

Baby got back!

I vacuumed the house on Friday night and I found these guys when I emptied the vacuum. I believe they are just common house spiders.

Later, I found another spider (a different species and I put it in the same jar. I looked in the jar a few minutes later and saw the small spider (in the picture) and the different spider... were both dead!

Early Saturday evening I saw a couple of tiny ants in my room. I found about 5 crawling around. I looked for their point of entry but I couldn't find it. I decided that they might have just gotten lost and I was safe from an ant invasion. Just to be on the safe side I sprayed a little Raid Ant and Roach formula around where I saw them.

Sunday morning I wake up and find this guy on the carpet.

He was all groggy so I assumed he got a big whiff of that poison. He was so groggy I was able to take this picture:

I think he must of crawled his way through a cobweb and that is what is all over his carapace. I knew I had to put him out of his misery but how? I've mashed one of these guys before in my shower and black ichor shot everywhere. So I decided to give ol' Cobby a burial at sea and I flushed him. Good night sweet prince.

As promised, here is a photo of my bug catcher. I got it at Target. It's a pretty weak vacuum (it runs on AA batteries).

And here is the nasty-ass cave cricket (or camel cricket or "crazy jumper" as my Mom used to say). Clunky says they are blind and they jump at your eyes so they can steal your sight. I'm not sure if that has been scientifically proven.

I have a basement apartment. Because of this I get my fair share of bugs. Mostly spiders, cave crickets (or camel crickets), and an occasional centipede. I've seen some pretty cool bugs (like a wolf spider covered in spiderlings) so I've decided to start cataloging them. Hopefully I can get a camera with a better macro (any suggestions?) for some better pics. Here's the first bug in the series. A picture of my bug catching device to follow.

So I was watching TV at 1am last night, relaxing. Suddenly, there was a thump at the window and I saw two eyes staring at me. It scared the crap out of me (and this isn't the first time it's happened). It was the kitty from two house down. My landlord used to let her in his house (I have the basement apartment to his house) until she peed all over some artwork of his.

She likes to hang out in my screened in area when it rains. I had to yell at her once for being to loud. To make up for it she left a huge dead rabbit at my door one morning. Um... thanks kitty.
